What Is a Double Pitch Conveyor Chain?

Αλυσίδα μεταφοράς διπλής κλίσηςA double pitch conveyor chain shares the same pin diameter, roller diameter, and inner plate depth as a standard roller chain — but the pitch (pin-centre-to-pin-centre distance) is exactly doubled. Halving the number of links per metre delivers two immediate engineering advantages: lower mass per unit length and a lower component cost. These gains make double pitch chains the preferred choice wherever conveying speed does not require the tight pitch of a power-transmission chain.

The extended pin design accommodates a wide range of standard and custom attachments — K-type, A-type, SA-type, and SK-type side-plate tabs for flights, scrapers, pusher dogs, carrier fingers, and crossbar rods. Hollow-pin variants accept cross rods and mesh netting directly through the chain width.

Because the sprocket pitch circle is larger than an equivalent single-pitch sprocket of the same tooth count, the polygon effect is reduced — less vibration and quieter operation in packaging lines and textile equipment where smooth product transfer matters.

Chain Type Guide

R-Roller (Small Roller) — Standard

The R-roller sits flush within the link plates. Most common configuration — used wherever the chain runs on conventional guide rails or over sprocket teeth. Suitable for all standard conveyor applications. ISO suffix: none (e.g., C208A, C212A, C216A). Select the R-roller when space between the chain and guide rail is restricted.

S-Roller (Large / Oversized Roller)

The S-roller projects above and below the link plates. Chosen when the conveyed product sits directly on the chain — the larger surface distributes the load and reduces point stress. The roller also rolls on the support rail directly, rather than the plate edges, which sharply reduces rail wear in long conveyor systems. ISO suffix: “L” (e.g., C208AL, C216AL). Minimum recommended sprocket tooth count: 30 teeth.

Heavy-Duty (H) Series — Thicker Plates

“H” suffix indicates thicker outer and inner link plates — for example, 2.03 mm versus 1.50 mm at the 25.40 mm pitch. Average tensile strength rises by 3–10% over the standard series; weight per metre increases proportionally. Use the H series when shock loading, frequent starts under load, or heavily loaded inclines are expected. Available in both R and S roller configurations.

Hollow-Pin Double Pitch Chain

Replaces the solid pin with a hollow-bore tube, allowing cross rods, cleats, and mesh netting to pass through the full chain width. Used in inclined conveyors for small parts, bakery proofing ovens, laundry tunnel washers, and fish/poultry processing. Interfit with standard double pitch sprockets and can run alongside standard αλυσίδα κυλίνδρων on a shared drive. No rollers — relies on the flat pin surface for support rail contact.

How to Select the Correct Chain

Calculate the design load

Multiply maximum working load by a service factor (1.5–2.0 smooth; 2.0–3.0 moderate shock). Divide the ultimate tensile strength Q by the design load. Target a minimum factor of safety of 7:1. If UTS ÷ design load < 7, step up to the next chain size.

Confirm the pitch

For speeds below 30 m/min with loads under 5 kN, start with C208A (25.40 mm pitch). Increase pitch for heavier loads or where a larger sprocket diameter is structurally advantageous. Avoid oversizing — larger pitch means larger, heavier sprockets throughout the system.

Choose roller type

Select S-roller (L suffix) when the conveyed item rests on the chain surface. Select R-roller for enclosed guide-rail systems or where vertical clearance is restricted. S-roller requires ≥ 30 sprocket teeth for smooth meshing.

Consider the operating environment

Outdoor / wet: black oxide or zinc-plated. Washdown / food-contact: 304 or 316 stainless steel. High temperature (> 200 °C): heat-resistant grade — contact our engineering team. Abrasive dust / grit: add external lubrication or specify self-lubricating bushings.

Specify attachments

Identify attachment type (K, A, SA, SK), mounting side (inner or outer plate), and spacing (every link, every 2nd link, etc.). Provide a dimensioned sketch or DXF for non-standard attachment geometry. We confirm feasibility and supply a sample before production.

Double Pitch Sprockets

Double pitch conveyor chain sprockets use a specific tooth geometry for the doubled pitch — standard single-pitch sprockets of the same tooth count will not mesh correctly and will cause rapid wear of both chain and sprocket. We supply precision-machined flame-cut steel sprockets in three hub configurations:

Type A

Flat plate, no hub projection. Bolted to a flange or disc. Lowest cost — light-duty applications.

Type B

Single-sided hub extension. Keyway and set-screw mounting. Most common general-purpose configuration.

Type C

Double-sided hub. Mid-shaft mounting or where end-float must be minimised.

Stocked for tooth counts 13T – 60T in C208A, C210A, C212A, and C216A pitches. Non-stock tooth counts and bore sizes machined to order — standard lead time 10–15 business days. Split sprockets available where shaft removal is impractical.
