What Is a Simple (Simplex) Roller Chain?

Simple Roller Chain

Simple roller chain — also called simplex roller chain — is a single-strand drive chain consisting of alternating inner and outer link plates, hardened steel pins, precision bushings, and free-rotating rollers. It is the most widely produced and stocked roller chain configuration in global industry, covering pitches from 12.70 mm (08B-1) through to 76.2 mm (48B-1) under ISO 606, and a matching range under ANSI B29.1. The simplex strand is the base unit from which duplex (two-strand) and triplex (three-strand) assemblies are built when higher load capacity is required without increasing pitch.

The working principle is unchanged since Hans Renold’s 1879 patent: each sprocket tooth engages a roller, transmitting torque through the pin-bushing interface. The roller rotates freely on the bushing, converting sliding friction into rolling contact — which is why correctly lubricated roller chain drives achieve 97–99% mechanical efficiency, outperforming V-belt alternatives on most continuous-duty cycles.

Ever Power simple roller chains are manufactured in carbon steel and stainless steel to ISO 606:2015 and ASME B29.1-2011. Every production batch is proof-load tested to 50% of published minimum tensile strength before despatch. Full dimensional inspection certificates and EN 10204 3.1 material mill certificates are supplied as standard on food-grade and regulated-environment orders.

120-1 ANSI B29.1 38.10 22.23 25.22 127.5 1,200 5.62

Note: ISO 08B-1 and ANSI 40-1 share the same 12.70 mm pitch but have different roller diameters (8.51 mm vs 7.92 mm) and are not interchangeable on the same sprocket. Always match chain and sprocket to the same standard.

Core Technical Advantages

97–99% Mechanical Efficiency

Rolling contact replaces sliding friction. Under correctly lubricated conditions roller chain consistently outperforms V-belt drives on high-torque continuous duty — even a 1% efficiency gain translates to measurable energy savings at scale.

🔗

Geen slip — Exacte snelheidsverhouding

Positive tooth engagement on every revolution. Speed ratio is exact and constant — essential for packaging lines, printing machinery, and multi-axis timing applications where synchronisation must hold across a full production shift.

🏳️

−40 °C to +150 °C Operating Range

Standard carbon steel performs reliably across this range; high-temperature alloy variants extend to +300 °C. Tolerates oil, dust, and moderate chemical contamination — environments that rapidly degrade rubber belts or damage precision gearbox seals.

📈

Predictable, Measurable Wear

Chain elongation is measurable with a simple ruler — replacement can be scheduled as planned maintenance rather than emergency response. Well-maintained drives achieve 15,000–25,000 hours service life before replacement is required.

🔧

Simple Field Maintenance

Chain replacement requires hand tools and no specialist knowledge. No proprietary service tooling, no dealer callout — a compelling total-cost argument for UK manufacturing operations managing tight maintenance budgets.

📦

Simplex / Duplex / Triplex

Load capacity scales by adding strands without changing pitch or sprocket tooth count. Attachment plates, extended pins, hollow-pin variants, self-lubricating bushings, and stainless steel all available across the standard range.

Available Grades & Configurations

Carbon Steel — Standard Grade

SAE 1040–1050 side plates, pins gas-carburised to 58–64 HRC case / 35–45 HRC core. Operating range −40 °C to +150 °C. Pre-lubricated with anti-rust oil before packaging. Default specification for UK industrial drive and conveyor applications.

Carbon Steel — High-Strength (HSP) Series

20CrMnTi alloy steel with deeper case hardening. Shot-peened rollers extend fatigue life by 20–35%. Matched-pair strand pitch variation held below 0.05 mm per 30 pitches for multi-strand drives. Specified for quarry, steel mill, and heavy minerals processing environments.

Stainless Steel — 304 / 316L

For food processing, pharmaceutical, and marine environments. 316L supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates as standard. NSF H1 food-grade lubricant option. Solid outer-plate construction for HACCP-compliant high-care zones. Full BRCGS audit documentation included without being requested separately.

Self-Lubricating (Sintered Bushing)

Oil-impregnated sintered alloy bushings release lubricant progressively during operation — no external lubrication system required. Suited to inaccessible conveyor runs and cleanroom installations. Approximately 70% of standard chain speed rating.

Attachment & Surface Treatment Variants

K1, K2, A1, A2 attachment plates at every link or selected intervals. Extended pins, hollow-pin variants for cross-rod assembly. Surface treatments include zinc-nickel electroplating (>500 h salt-spray), black oxide, nickel plating, and PTFE dry-film coating. Custom configurations from 50 m MOQ; 4–6 week lead time from drawing approval.

Aggregate processing · ANSI 120-1 heavy series

Chain replacement intervals were running at 11 months — well below the 18-month target built into the maintenance budget. After trialling the Ever Power 120HSP high-strength series in parallel with standard 120-1 chain on an adjacent drive, the HSP chain showed 38% less elongation at the 14-month mark. The trial was extended to all conveyor drives in early 2024. Replacement intervals moved to 19–21 months, recovering the original design target and reducing annual chain procurement spend by approximately £22,000 across the site.

“We had written off hitting our eighteen-month change interval. The Ever Power HSP chain recovered it at nineteen months without any change to our lubrication regime. The elongation figures were the best we have seen on any chain across this site.”

Veelgestelde vragen

What is the price of simplex roller chain in the UK?

Standard carbon steel ISO 08B-1 runs approximately £4–£8 per metre in volume; ANSI 80-1 runs £12–£20 per metre depending on grade and quantity. 316L stainless commands a 60–120% premium over carbon steel at the same pitch. Contact [email protected] for an accurate quote — standard sizes returned within one working day.

How do I tell whether my machine uses ISO or ANSI chain?

UK and European machinery defaults to ISO 606 B-series (08B, 10B, 12B, 16B…). Machinery from North America — or from Caterpillar and John Deere — uses ANSI B29.1 A-series (40, 60, 80, 120…). Measure pitch (pin-to-pin in mm) and roller diameter, then cross-reference against the specification table above. At 12.70 mm pitch, roller diameter identifies the standard: 8.51 mm = ISO 08B-1; 7.92 mm = ANSI 40-1.

When should I replace a worn roller chain?

The standard replacement threshold is 1.5% elongation for power transmission and timing drives, and 3% for slow-speed conveying applications. To measure in the field: select a 30-link section, measure pin-centre to pin-centre across all 30 pitches, and compare to the nominal length (pitch × 30). For ISO 12B-1 at 19.05 mm pitch, nominal 30-pitch length is 571.5 mm — replace at 580.1 mm. Any ketting showing cracked side plates, seized links, or visible roller damage should be replaced immediately regardless of elongation.

How quickly can you deliver to Birmingham or Sheffield?

For standard ISO and ANSI sizes in UK stock, orders placed before midday are despatched same day for next-morning delivery to most mainland UK postcodes. For non-standard or custom-specification chain, lead times extend to 4–6 weeks. Consignment stock arrangements can be established for sites where delivery lead time on critical chain cannot be tolerated — contact us to discuss.

What documentation is provided with food-grade stainless steel chain?

Standard documentation for 316L food-grade orders includes EN 10204 3.1 material mill certificate, dimensional inspection report, NSF H1 lubricant approval data sheet, and proof-load test certificate — the complete set required for BRCGS site audits and HACCP records, provided without being requested separately.
