Custom Cut Lengths

A sharp top chain is built on the geometry of a standard roller chain but adds precision-ground teeth formed directly on the link plates. Each tooth is heat-treated to a consistent surface hardness, then manufactured from specially selected alloy steel so the grip holds across the full service life — not just when the chain is new. The acute tooth profile bites cleanly into timber, log bark, and rough-sawn surfaces with minimum penetration depth, protecting wood-fibre integrity and lumber grade.

Typical Application Areas

Log Haul-Up Conveyors

Lifts wet, debarked, or rough-sawn logs from pond or ground level up inclined ramps into the primary breakdown saw. Positive tooth engagement prevents rollback under shock loading.

Log Deck & Sorting Tables

Indexes logs accurately between sorting gates and infeed rolls without slippage, maintaining the precise spacing required for efficient cutting programs and automated scanning systems.

Debarking Lines

Feeds rotating-drum or ring debarkers at controlled speed. Sharp teeth maintain grip despite bark fragments, mud, and tannins that cause smooth chains to slip or ride over the log surface.

Green-Chain Sorting

Moves freshly sawn boards away from the primary breakdown at a steady pace. The low-draw tooth profile prevents face marking on appearance-grade softwood and hardwood lumber.

Chains & Sprockets

Sharp top chains require sprockets machined to the corresponding ISO B-series tooth form. Chain pitch is defined as the centre-to-centre distance between adjacent roller pins — expressed in millimetres for ISO-series chains, and in 1/8-inch increments for ANSI-series chains. Matching the correct sprocket pitch, tooth count, and bore to the chain pitch is critical: mismatched components accelerate pin-bushing wear on the chain and tooth-flank wear on the sprocket simultaneously, roughly halving the service interval of both components.

We supply hardened-tooth sprockets in plain bore, pilot bore, and taper-lock configurations to match every sharp top chain size listed in the specification table above. Minimum recommended tooth count for timber conveyor applications is 17 teeth per sprocket, which limits chordal action and the associated impact loading on teeth as the chain articulates at each revolution.

Compared with flat-belt or V-belt drives, sprocket-and-chain drives maintain positive engagement without slippage under shock loading — a decisive advantage in log-handling machinery where a sudden jam can momentarily spike torque several times above the running load. Chain drives are also easier to guard and maintain than belt systems in the wet, dusty, debris-laden environment of a sawmill.
