A roller chain coupling connects two parallel shafts using a short loop of duplex roller chain wrapped around two matching sprockets — one on each shaft. As the coupling transmits torque, the chain articulates slightly at each link, accommodating small amounts of angular and parallel misalignment between the shafts without generating the bending loads that would damage a rigid coupling. Chain couplings are well-suited to heavy-duty, low-to-moderate speed drives where robustness and ease of replacement are the primary requirements: replacement chain is available off-the-shelf, installation requires no special tooling, and the coupling can be disassembled without disturbing either shaft by simply removing the connecting link and sliding the chain off the sprockets.
