As the coupling transmits torque, the chain articulates slightly at each link, accommodating small amounts of angular and parallel misalignment between the shafts without generating the bending loads that would damage a rigid coupling. Chain couplings are well-suited to heavy-duty, low-to-moderate speed drives where robustness and ease of replacement are the primary requirements: replacement chain is available off-the-shelf, installation requires no special tooling, and the coupling can be disassembled without disturbing either shaft by simply removing the connecting link and sliding the chain off the sprockets.
